Worcester’s Hopmarket – home to an eclectic mix of shops – is hosting a special art event this coming weekend.

The retail space on The Foregate will present a Hopmarket Arts event on Sunday 21 July, from 10.00am to 5.00pm; everyone is welcome.

The family friendly event – which is being organised by Participate in Art – will include a pop-up art gallery featuring five local artists and artisans, from all mediums, subjects and styles.

The five artists who will showcase their work are :

Local architectural watercolour and pop-up art artist Jilly Oxlade-Arnott, who will be painting in-situ throughout the event encouraging interaction with visitors and fellow artists alike; Sam Fenner, quirky animal painter who is available for prints, commissions and originals; Richard Evans, a celebrated glass artist who will be bringing along a selection of handcrafted glass pendants; Deb Stanley, a Malvern-based artist who has recently been awarded The David Shepherd Award for The Best Work Depicting an Endangered Species for the second year running. Deb takes her inspiration from subjects such as animal, vegetable and mineral, along with the changing seasons; Suzie Elizabeth Hunt, who will be displaying her mixed media and photography work for the first time; and Lenny Ledgerwood, a Worcester-based artist who produces handprinted lino-cut cards and original limited-edition prints.

All of the artists will be available to showcase their work and share their inspiration and creativity.

Chris Oxlade-Arnott, Director of Participate in Art said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to present such a wide range of amazing local artists at events such as Hopmarket Arts this Sunday. The venue continues to reinvent itself and is attracting increasing numbers of visitors and shoppers. Come along and talk to the artists, see their work, shop, eat, drink and relax!”
Similar art, artistic and cultural events will take place every third Sunday throughout the year within The Hopmarket courtyard.

Bill Simpson, Chair of The Hopmarket Charity Trustees added: “This art event is the fourth in the series being staged in the idyllic setting of The Hopmarket courtyard off The Foregate in Worcester. Gazebos create the right atmosphere for the artists to demonstrate and display their work. Come and visit us and our independent retail market.”

Participate in Art was launched in 2016 to provide opportunities, support and access to artists, art communities and organisations. Through exhibitions, galleries, educational services, talks, workshops, supplier partnerships and events, it increases the awareness and approachability of the arts.

The event is supported by Worcester City Council and The Hopmarket Charity.

The Hopmarket has been a place to do business since 1731 where dealers came to trade hops. In the early 1900s, the site was replaced with the current building to become a hotel and bank before being converted to a thriving shopping courtyard.
