Worcester’s Hopmarket – home to an eclectic mix of shops – is hosting a special art event later this month.

The retail space on The Foregate will present its very first Hopmarket Arts on Easter Sunday, 21 April, from 10.00am to 5.00pm; everyone is welcome.

The family friendly event – which is being organised by Participate in Art – will include a pop-up art gallery featuring five local artists and artisans, from all mediums, subjects and styles.

The five artists who will showcase their work are:

  • Local architectural watercolour and pop-up art artist Jilly Oxlade-Arnott, who will be painting in–situ throughout the event encouraging interaction with visitors and fellow artists alike
  • Bic Beaumont, painter, print maker and photographer
  • Justine Morris, jeweller and designer
  • Laura Pettit, a freelance illustrator
  • Penny Webb, artist and photographer, who specialises in canvas acrylic paintings and graphite pencil drawings.

Chris Oxlade-Arnott, Director of Participate in Art said: “We are thrilled to be hosting this inaugural event in The Hopmarket. Our aim is to provide a platform for local artists and allow them to showcase their work. This Easter Sunday event will welcome some fabulous artists and artisans; we look forward to a wonderful day!”

Similar art, artistic and cultural events will take place every third Sunday throughout the year within The Hopmarket courtyard.

Participate in Art will also be hosting a pop-up art gallery throughout the Easter weekend – from Good Friday to Easter Monday – at No 16, The Hopmarket, showcasing the work of more artists.

Bill Simpson, Chairman of The Hopmarket Charity Trustees said: “We are delighted to be putting on such an extravaganza this Easter. As an independent shopping courtyard in the heart of our community, such events are hugely important to us, bringing residents, visitors and shop tenants together.”

Participate in Art was launched in 2016 to provide opportunities, support and access to artists, art communities and organisations. Through exhibitions, galleries, educational services, talks, workshops, supplier partnerships and events, it increases the awareness and approachability of the arts.

The event is supported by Worcester City Council and The Hopmarket Charity.

The Hopmarket has been a place to do business since 1731 where dealers came to trade hops. In the early 1900s the site was replaced with the current building to become a hotel and bank before being converted to a thriving shopping courtyard.
